Jess Mowry was born in Mississippi in 1960 and raised in Oakland, California, by his father. Jess has been a drug-dealer's bodyguard, made his living collecting scrap metal, and worked in a center for street kids. In 1988 he bought an Underwood typewriter for $8 and began writing.
